Real return

Your return after subtracting inflation. What your money can actually buy, not what it says.

Performance

Example. Earn 7% while inflation runs 6% and your real return is roughly 1%.

The nominal return is the headline number an investment advertises. The real return is what survives inflation, and it is the only one that decides whether your buying power grew.

The idea in one line

Real return is roughly the nominal return minus inflation. An option paying 6% while inflation runs 6% leaves you exactly where you started: the number in your account grew, but it buys the same basket of goods. Earn 7% against 6% inflation and your real return is only about 1%. The headline rate flatters; the real return tells the truth about whether you actually got richer.

Why tax makes it sharper

It gets worse after tax, because tax is charged on the nominal gain, not the real one. If you earn 7% and pay tax on that whole 7%, but inflation ate 6%, you can end up paying tax on a return that barely improved, or even reduced, your buying power. This is the hidden trap in “safe” options like a plain fixed deposit: the number always rises, so it feels like a gain, while the real, after-tax return can be close to zero.

Why it drives where you invest

Real return is the reason money for long-term goals usually needs growth assets like equity, not just deposits, because only beating inflation over time preserves and grows what your money can buy. See inflation and try the inflation calculator.

Questions people ask

What is a real return?

Your return after inflation is subtracted. It is the only figure that shows whether your buying power actually grew, unlike the headline (nominal) return.

Why does the real return matter more than the headline rate?

Because prices rise too. Earning 6% while inflation runs 6% leaves you where you started, and tax on the nominal gain can leave you worse off.
