Security code (CVV)

Also called Card Verification Value (CVV)

The 3-digit code on the back of a card that proves you hold the physical card during online payments. Never share it.

Example. An online payment may ask for the 3-digit CVV printed on the back of your card, along with the card number and expiry.

The CVV, or Card Verification Value, is the 3-digit security code printed on the back of a credit or debit card. It proves you are holding the real card during an online payment, where nothing is swiped or inserted. Treat it like a password: you type it yourself on a payment page, and you never share it with anyone, because no bank or company needs you to tell it your CVV.
