Example. Two years of credit card bills paid in full and on time build a clean credit history.

Your credit history is your record of borrowing and repaying: every loan and card, how much you borrowed, and whether you paid on time. A credit bureau keeps it and turns it into your credit score. See building credit from zero to start one.

Questions people ask

What is a credit history?

It's the record of every loan and credit card you've had, how much you borrowed and whether you paid on time. Credit bureaus keep it, and lenders read it before deciding on a new loan or card.

What if I have no credit history?

Lenders have nothing to judge you by, so you may show as having no score. A common way to start is a secured credit card against a fixed deposit, used lightly and paid in full on time.

How do I check my credit history?

RBI requires every credit bureau to give individuals one free full credit report, including the credit score, once a year on request. The report shows your accounts and payment record.
