Your NISM certificate expires, and the clock is quiet
Revalidate before expiry, not after
The basic idea. A NISM certificate is the qualification India’s mutual fund and securities professionals must hold. It comes from NISM, the National Institute of Securities Markets, set up by the regulator SEBI. Most NISM certificates are valid for three years (the separate IFSCA course runs two), and the clock is quiet, so it is easy to let one lapse without noticing.
The two ways to stay certified. Pass the relevant examination again, or complete a one-day Continuing Professional Education programme. Either way the certificate is revalidated for three years from the expiry of the existing one.
The word that matters. Both routes have to happen before the existing certificate expires. Revalidation is designed as a continuation, not a rescue.
Why it catches people. Nothing dramatic happens on the expiry date. There is no lock on a door. The certificate simply stops being current, and the person holding it often finds out at the worst possible moment, when an employer or a platform asks for proof.
What to do about it. Put the expiry date in a calendar the day you pass, with a reminder three months before. The CPE route is a single day. Finding a fresh exam slot at short notice is a different problem.
GreenFunds is not affiliated with NISM or SEBI. Confirm current rules and dates on nism.ac.in before you act.
Why the gap trips people. Three years is long enough to forget entirely. The certificate does not warn you, your employer may not track it, and nothing visibly changes on the day it lapses.
What changes in three years. Quite a lot. Tax treatment, SEBI limits, scheme categories and disclosure rules all move, and the workbook is revised to match. The revalidation requirement is not administrative box-ticking; the thing you were certified on has genuinely changed.
The practical version. Note the expiry the day you pass. Set a reminder at three months. Decide then whether you want the one-day CPE route or a fresh attempt at the exam, and book it while both options are still open to you.
