The short version. A SIP, or Systematic Investment Plan, is simply an instruction to invest a fixed amount in a mutual fund on the same date every month, automatically.

What happened. Indians invested a record ₹32,490 crore into mutual funds through SIPs in September 2026, the highest month ever, according to AMFI data. Figures like this get revised, so check the latest on amfiindia.com.

Why it matters to you. More people than ever are investing a fixed amount every month, on autopilot. If the word SIP has been floating around your group chat and you are not sure what it means, this is the one to read.

What a SIP actually is. SIP stands for Systematic Investment Plan. In plain words, it is an instruction to invest the same amount in a mutual fund on the same date every month, automatically. You set ₹500 or ₹5,000, pick a fund, and the money moves on its own. That is the whole idea.

A rupee example. Say you start a SIP of ₹500 a month in an equity fund. At an assumed 12% a year, that grows to about ₹1.15 lakh after 10 years, of which ₹60,000 is your own money and the rest is growth. The 12% here is only an illustration, not what you will actually earn. Markets go up and down, and some years will be negative.

Why so many people do it. Two reasons. First, it builds the habit, because you never have to remember to invest. Second, buying every month means you buy at different prices, some high, some low, so you do not have to guess the perfect day to start. You can begin small and increase it later.

One honest caution. A SIP is a way to invest, not a guarantee. It lowers the risk of bad timing, it does not remove market risk. What you earn depends on the fund you pick and how markets do. If you may need the money within a year or two, an equity SIP is usually the wrong place for it.
