Yes, a mutual fund can pause your withdrawal

Restriction on redemption, and its limits

The rule. In specific circumstances a mutual fund can restrict redemptions. SEBI caps it hard: a maximum of 10 working days in any 90-day period, with approval from the boards of both the AMC and the trustees, and SEBI informed immediately.

When it is allowed. Only when a systemic problem freezes liquidity across the market at large. A market failure, an exchange closure, or a force majeure event.

When it is not. It cannot be used because one security in the portfolio turned illiquid, or because the fund made a poor investment decision, or because redemptions are simply heavy. It is not a liquidity management tool.

The protection most people do not know about. Requests up to ₹2 lakh are never restricted. Above that, the fund pays the first ₹2 lakh freely and the restriction applies only to the excess.

A rupee example. You ask for ₹3.5 lakh while a restriction is in force. ₹2 lakh is processed normally. The remaining ₹1.5 lakh waits.

Worth knowing before you need it, mostly so a headline about a fund house does not send you into a panic that costs you more than the pause would have.

How rare it is. The bar is a market-wide freeze, approved by two boards and reported to SEBI immediately. This is not something a fund reaches for when a week goes badly.

What to do if it ever happens. Check whether your need is above ₹2 lakh, because below that nothing changes for you. Then check the fund house’s press release, which has to explain the circumstances. Panic selling other holdings to cover a pause that lifts in days is how a restriction turns into a real loss.

The wider point. Money you might need next month should not be anywhere it can be paused. That is what a savings account and an emergency fund are for, and it is why the cushion comes before the investing.
