Life changes and getting help

When status changes, and when things go wrong

An investor’s life keeps changing, and part of good service is handling those changes cleanly. The classic one is a minor turning 18. The moment they attain majority, the folio freezes for the guardian’s operation and every standing instruction, SIP, STP, SWP, stops. To bring it back to life, the now-adult must obtain a PAN (reissued with the same number but a new signature), complete their own KYC, and supply a bank account in their own name with a banker-attested signature, before submitting the minor-attaining-majority form. A parallel logic covers an NRI becoming a resident (close the NRO/NRE/FCNR accounts, open a resident account and demat, and inform the AMCs and KRA) and a change of Karta in an HUF (the new Karta’s KYC, the former Karta’s death certificate, a bank signature certificate, and an indemnity by all coparceners). A helpful rule of thumb: personal details like name and address are changed once through the KRA and ripple out to every fund, while bank details, holding mode and nominations are changed directly with each fund.

The other half of service is what happens when something goes wrong. An investor is not left stranded: the AMC must redress a grievance within 21 calendar days. If it is not resolved to the investor’s satisfaction, the complaint can be escalated to SEBI, most easily through the SCORES platform (the SEBI Complaint Redress System), where it can be lodged and tracked online. Knowing this path, and telling investors about it plainly, is part of treating their money, and their trust, with the seriousness it deserves.

  1. 1

When a minor turns 18, all transactions freeze until the folio is updated, the PoA-style guardian operation ends, and standing SIPs, STPs and SWPs stop.

  2. 2

To convert a minor's folio to major status, the now-adult must obtain a PAN, complete KYC, and provide a bank account in their own name with a banker-attested signature.

  3. 3

The PAN is reissued with the same number but a new signature, and any demat account is opened fresh in a single name.

  4. 4

An NRI becoming a resident closes NRO/NRE/FCNR accounts, opens a resident account, updates the demat account to resident, and informs the AMCs and the KRA.

  5. 5

A change of Karta in an HUF needs the new Karta's KYC, the death certificate of the former Karta, a bank signature certificate, and an indemnity signed by all coparceners.

  6. 6

Personal details (name, address) are changed once through the KRA and flow to all funds; bank details, holding mode and nominations are changed directly with each fund.

  7. 7

A grievance must be redressed by the AMC within 21 calendar days; unresolved complaints can be escalated to SEBI, including through the SCORES platform.

Rupee example

On her 18th birthday, an investor's folio freezes and her SIP stops. She gets a PAN and bank account in her own name, completes KYC, and submits the minor-attaining-majority form, only then do transactions resume, now in her own name.

When a minor invested in a fund turns 18, what happens first?

On attaining majority the folio is frozen for the guardian's operation and standing instructions stop, until the now-adult updates PAN, KYC and bank details in their own name.
It is not automatic continuation, forced redemption, or indefinite guardian control.

A grievance raised with an AMC must be redressed within:

The AMC must redress an investor grievance within 21 calendar days; if unresolved, it can be escalated to SEBI, including via the SCORES platform.
7 days, 90 days and 1 year are not the prescribed timeline.

SCORES is:

SCORES (SEBI Complaint Redress System) is SEBI's web-based platform where investors lodge and track grievances against market intermediaries.
It is not a scheme, an SIP variant, or a credit score.

A change of Karta in an HUF folio requires, among other documents:

Changing the Karta needs the new Karta's KYC, the former Karta's death certificate, a bank signature certificate, and an indemnity signed by all coparceners.
A new HUF PAN, a phone call, or no documents would not suffice.
